TEST DRIVE #3 - Alien Bazaar/Ten Forward

#1

Option 001. Alien planet, marketplace: So you're new to this whole space travel thing. The ship is cool and all, but there are hundreds of alien worlds out there. You want to explore. To see what the universe REALLY looks like.

Well, here's your chance! Your first stop is this lovely indoor marketplace, which looks kind of like a mall. There are stalls one after the other as far as the eye can see, and they sell all kinds of things: food, clothes, trinkets, animals, fabrics, jewelry, perfumes, books, etc etc. Some things look human, easy to recognize; other things look very alien. There are two levels, and constant chatter as people hawk their wares and discuss prices.

Do you want to explore? Poke at the weird shops? Buy a gift for a new friend? Flirt with someone at the food court? Maybe you see a pickpocket, and must run to the aid of the victim. Maybe there's some other villainy afoot. After all, a crowded marketplace is a good place for villains to lurk, causing trouble. Whether you're a hero or just an unassuming traveler, there proves to be some adventure for you on this planet.

Option 002. Aboard the Enterprise, Ten Forward: You have no idea what just happened. One minute you were home, and now you're on a spaceship, in the middle of a crowded room. It looks like a bar. There are people eating and drinking, some in uniform, others not. Some are clearly aliens.

You've managed to land in Ten Forward a long bar with barstools and a bartender, tables sprinkled throughout, and the far wall is nothing but windows out to space. It looks like a nice lounge, low conversation making the room hum.

Better ask some questions and find out where you are, or just tap the closest person on the shoulder and try to make friends. The bar is open.

He made a face at the mere suggestion, "No way. Haven't you read Jacob's The Monkey's Paw? Don't ever buy one from a bazaar."

And his shoulders slump lightly with the realization that he's not going to get any help and turned back toward the bar, "Guess some people just don't care about others' suffering." Was it his dirty little attempt at a guilt trip? The sideways glance back at the grumpy patron probably pointed towards 'yes, yes it was' but that wasn't the only reason the man attracted his attention once again. He recognized that accent. Hell, he recognized the whole attitude.

What a baby. "A lil' sufferin's good for the soul." He finishes his bourbon and asks for another three fingers. "And I have actually, but it's not exactly on most people's reading lists these days..." The only reason McCoy knows it was because of his late grandfather. The man enjoyed old short stories, some of them he would read him when he was little. He has to wonder why in the hell this punk even knows that. He doesn't strike him as the book worm, but there is a discernible intelligence to him... McCoy had just assumed it was street smarts.

"....suffering is good for the-" and he interrupted himself with an amused snicker, "Now that, that's definitely something I've heard before. And don't agree with." He added quickly, remembering the last time he had heard that phrase was when Bones' hypo made him as sick as a damn dog. He could still remember feeling like he was leaking. Leaking! He didn't need a repeat of it.

"See if you're saying that when you have an itch you can't scratch."

You are WONDERFUL

It takes all the determination and poise of years of diplomacy, carefully schooling her face and her voice and the way she holds herself, to appear unperturbed by a Wraith stepping coolly towards her.

The only sign that she's not as calm as her steady gaze suggests is a tension, taut in her shoulders, a tell she's never quite been able to rid herself of. One that very few people notice.

It's not diplomatic to look repulsed. So instead, one corner of her mouth lifts in a smile that has no warmth of feeling in it.

Her eyes, though, are hard.

"I want only the safety of the people of the Pegasus Galaxy."

Which is not a denial of his accusation, by any means. She does not wish the Wraith well. None of them.

But that is because of what they are and what they do.

For Elizabeth, it is the opposite.

It's only been in the past few years that she even considered that standing on a starship and looking out into space would be possible. She's come a long way from campaigning against military expenditure, though she still has a heart that longs for peace. Now, though, she's seen the good and the beauty of what the Stargate Program is doing.

Now, she can't imagine not wanting to see the stars.

She turns, with a polite smile, and her years of diplomacy turn her surprise at the woman she sees into nothing more than a nod and a curiosity in her eyes.

"No, not at all. I was simply enjoying the view."

"Well you should. That's free advice from a doctor for Heaven's sake." Of course, though, he would have to retire his shingles if every one of his patients actually listened to his pearls of wisdom. And that sure as shit isn't going to happen any time soon.

"You don't need to worry about me now. I've got an arsenal that could take care of any itch any place..." No suffering for this man.

"Doctor?" Okay, really how many doctors were there with that accent and that type of bedside manner? His eyes narrowed for just a brief moment before it was all smile again. And he turned to face the man properly and held out his hand.

"Jim Kirk by the way." And then he waited.

Dylan, looking casual in his long-sleeved uniform shirt, but with the force lance, as ever, in its holster on his leg, is heading into the lounge for something to eat. He's even beginning to get the hang of what to ask the machines here for when he wants a meal.

He still prefers Andromeda's autochef, but at least he's getting food.

He's on his way to the replicator when, suddenly, there's a kid there.

A kid just ... standing there, next to the replicator. Like he's just phased in or tesseracted or something weird like that.

Dylan stops walking.

"Huh."

Adults. They're the scariest thing Villien has ever faced in his few years. Especially his father. Luckily, this man wasn't him but the fear of it all did make the boy phase back out of the visible spectrum for a moment before he forced himself to stay visible.

He didn't say anything. But he was ready to run. They wouldn't catch him. They couldn't catch him.

Another few leisurely paces, bringing him quite close, close enough that if he were to attack her she'd have no chance of escaping him. But he does nothing. Just looks at her. His smile takes on a knowing quality as he takes her words for an admission. "I am sure you do." For all except one race, he thinks, but he doesn't say it. It's completely unnecessary to speak those words out loud. They are clear enough even without being voiced. He is, however, no more angered than he is surprised. He has heard it before, countless times and in countless ways.

He chuckles quietly, a surprisingly gentle sound. And, perhaps, a bit condescending. "Ah, the hypocrisy of the human race. I wonder if it will ever cease to both amaze and amuse me."

Yeoman Janice Rand | AOS Option 001

No matter how much Janice loved being out in space, some time spent without metal floors beneath her feet was needed. She had spent most of her leave simply enjoying wider spaces and air that had teasing hints of scents that she would probably never identify. Eventually, curiosity led her to the market where she browsed the stalls, occasionally asking questions about the wares that she had never seen before. Her satchel already had a few, small souvenirs that she intended to send to her family when she had the chance.

A stall that held dozens of types of art supplies finally caught her full attention. Sorting through the chalks and paints, Jan stepped back for a moment, considering what would be absolutely necessary for her latest projects and what would inspire the next one she had started planning. It wasn't until she felt someone behind her that she realized she should have been more careful.

Noriko shakes her head for a minute, pushing the glass away from her.

"I've had cheap whiskey before. I've had cheap a lot of things before... But that's just especially bad," she manages. "It tastes weirdly flat."

"I am sure you can. But one must be allowed to keep some secrets, no?" Though in his case it isn't a matter of just some secrets. He's got a ton of them.

Henry scowls but nods. He hates secrets. But they were marginally better than lies. "Fine."
theycallmetodd: (Think)

[personal profile] theycallmetodd 2014-07-31 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
He somehow managed not to chuckle at Henry's obvious disappointment. "You have your own, do you not?" He counters instead, nodding to the book.
goldencobra: (S1 - Sad)

"Yeah. I guess so." Why do adults always have to be right?

Todd would argue that he's always right, even in the rare occasions when he's wrong.

The boy suddenly looks quite sad, disproportionately to for the conversation, Todd thinks. Saying nothing for now, he just studies the boy, his head tilted slightly to the side in a curious look.
goldencobra: (S1 - Thinking)

[personal profile] goldencobra 2014-07-31 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Henry didn't say anything either. Instead, he was looking through the pages he'd filled with the information he'd previously gathered, trying to take his mind off the problems and secrets he had.
theycallmetodd: (Think)

[personal profile] theycallmetodd 2014-07-31 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
"Now I think I am the curious one," Todd finally says, breaking the silence. "What manner of secrets do you keep to cause such a reaction?"
goldencobra: (S1 - Eyeroll)

[personal profile] goldencobra 2014-07-31 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
"If I told you, they wouldn't be secrets any more."
theycallmetodd: (Pensive)

[personal profile] theycallmetodd 2014-07-31 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
"True, they wouldn't be. The question is, then: do they have cause to stay secret? Or are you keeping them as such unnecessarily?"
goldencobra: (S1 - Determined)

[personal profile] goldencobra 2014-07-31 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
"I could ask the same of you and yours."
theycallmetodd: (Smileish?)

[personal profile] theycallmetodd 2014-07-31 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
"You could." Todd just smiles. Nice try. "And I have my reasons. For now."
goldencobra: (S1 - Thinking)

[personal profile] goldencobra 2014-07-31 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
"Then so do I." You're not getting something for nothing. Especially when this stuff hurts to talk about.

Stubborn little boy, isn't he? "Fair enough." He's patient, he can wait.
