TEST DRIVE #3 - Alien Bazaar/Ten Forward

#1

Option 001. Alien planet, marketplace: So you're new to this whole space travel thing. The ship is cool and all, but there are hundreds of alien worlds out there. You want to explore. To see what the universe REALLY looks like.

Well, here's your chance! Your first stop is this lovely indoor marketplace, which looks kind of like a mall. There are stalls one after the other as far as the eye can see, and they sell all kinds of things: food, clothes, trinkets, animals, fabrics, jewelry, perfumes, books, etc etc. Some things look human, easy to recognize; other things look very alien. There are two levels, and constant chatter as people hawk their wares and discuss prices.

Do you want to explore? Poke at the weird shops? Buy a gift for a new friend? Flirt with someone at the food court? Maybe you see a pickpocket, and must run to the aid of the victim. Maybe there's some other villainy afoot. After all, a crowded marketplace is a good place for villains to lurk, causing trouble. Whether you're a hero or just an unassuming traveler, there proves to be some adventure for you on this planet.

2

Option 002. Aboard the Enterprise, Ten Forward: You have no idea what just happened. One minute you were home, and now you're on a spaceship, in the middle of a crowded room. It looks like a bar. There are people eating and drinking, some in uniform, others not. Some are clearly aliens.

You've managed to land in Ten Forward a long bar with barstools and a bartender, tables sprinkled throughout, and the far wall is nothing but windows out to space. It looks like a nice lounge, low conversation making the room hum.

Better ask some questions and find out where you are, or just tap the closest person on the shoulder and try to make friends. The bar is open.

Oh yay!! I'm so glad. Er, that we can continue, not the procrastination bit. ;) Haha

The succession of emotions that pass over Lal's features are something, that's for sure. They aren't wild and unbridled as before, but rather... cheekier, if that's the right word. They carry a kind of confidence under the mischievousness.

Guinan smiles.

"You may be right. Timestreams here have been crossed many times lately. I would think it's very likely you're somewhere from my future."

It still leaves her curious, of course. Very curious.

"I take it you ended up here suddenly, then?"

She inclines her head.

"You're a time traveler?"

How interesting.

She cants her head, looking at him with mild recollection. She doesn't know him, not precisely, but there is something familiar...

Something... almost respectable about him.

"Really? Don't the Q own timepieces? You're a little late."

A wave of the hand.

"You know time is of no consequence to the Q. I'm merely here to stop anything big from happening, make sure all this gets tidied away at the end... that sort of thing." He takes a sip from his drink. "Mm... You mortals do make decent beverages, at least."

"It will be very pleasant," Jem agrees, and with most things Jem says, he means it with his whole heart. "And it will be something familiar amid all of this chaos." He tucks the books under his arms and leads Tessa away from the stall.

"I hope there are violins, the music does not seem right when it comes from these modern devices. There is something cold and impersonal about it."

"I'm going to sound like the Spanish Inquisition, but what is the last thing you remember?" He wishes there was one of the medical scanner thingies available to give him a quick answer. The hurt expression on his face wrenches at his insides. Elizabeth is one of the people who he tries, tried, not to hurt.

He wants her to be real. He would do a lot of things to have one last conversation with her.

It always amazes her that Steve never realizes how people, particularly ladies, react to him. It's probably for the best considering his fame. He could have easily became insufferable if he'd let the image and the changes the serum created change him from the skinny artist that had been so determined to enlisted.

The thought gives her an odd sense of deja vu when he blushes, reminding her of their taxi ride through Brooklyn. "No one there would have cared either. At least not anyone who mattered." There would have been a few that might have laughed, but she wouldn't have and neither would any of his friends.

Taking his arm, she smiles up at him, remembering how often she'd had hoped that this would happen. "How long have you been here? Is this where you went after you were found?"

She's about to say something in response to that first part, a huge grin breaking out on her face, when she stops, in the middle of forming a sentence, and blinks, her head tilting back to the other side.

"And the Doctor? What, like, two versions of him?"

She's not entirely sure she wants to imagine what two versions of the Doctor aboard the same spaceship might do, and she laughs, after a moment, at the thought.

"I used to travel with him. And I'm not sure this place is ready for two Doctors."

Lucie laughed. "I can guarantee it's not. But then, is any place ready for even one?"

Dylan's smile echoes his, though it's a little less bold, a little less full, because there are compromises he's had to make.

What was the comparison he drew when he signed up the Sabra-Jaguars to the charter? Yeah. Stalin and the Allies. Ancient military history. Trading off ideals for practicalities has never been something that's made him comfortable, but as a man single-handedly trying to pull together an alliance out of nothing, it's had to be done.

(Those slaves will be freed.)

"That's what I like to hear."

Conviction. One of the many things that seems to have died out since the Fall.

The guy finally sheathes the sword, and that's the cue Dylan needs to holster the force lance he's been holding loose but alert at his side. He flicks his fingers, giving it one, two expert twists before he slips it back into the holster at his thigh.

"I'm afraid not. Should I?"

Compromise. Nerevar knows quite well the bittersweet taste of it. The Great Houses are hard enough to manage when one doesn't mean to alter their religion and their way of life. All he does, he is able to get away with because the power of the Nerevarine carries with it a heavy expectation, an unfulfilled promise that hangs over it like a dark cloud - one day he will be expected to drive the Empire from Morrowind forever. He knows the more traditional Houses will not wish to wait for the Empire to die of old age. And though he desperately wishes otherwise, he knows that when the time comes, much innocent blood will be spilled.

He bows slightly and gives his recitation.

"Serjo Redoran Garyn Balvadares of Bal Isra, Archmaster of House Redoran, Knight of the Imperial Dragon, Defender and Hortator of the Five Great Dunmer Houses, Proclaimed Nerevar Incarnate by the Four Ashland Tribes, Supreme Commander of all House and Imperial Forces in the Vvardenfell District, Champion of Azura, Hand of Mephala, Sword of Boethiah, and Protector of Morrowind."

Beat.

"At least I think that's all of them. Most call me Nerevar Redoran. A little more than half a year ago I walked into a god's house and killed him. If you don't remember that, you've been long away from the Mundus indeed."

"Like you said. Humanity went out to new planets, and not all of them were hospitable. Besides, we, uh, had a little help with some of the technology."

A lot of humanity's greatest scientific advancements -- even through into more recent times, like Harper's crazy time-traveling teleport -- came about as a result of a combination of Perseid technology and human ingenuity. Just like Harper said.

"In your time, yeah, it still was in its early stages. In my world, too."

He shrugs.

"It's just a part of what humanity is. Something like 90 percent of humans have been genetically enhanced in one way or another."

She arches an eyebrow.

"So you're familiar with the Q? What part of space are you from?"

Alec blinks at this question and actually gives it some long thought.

"You know, I have no idea. I've never actually charted out where my home world was compared to other people's. Usually I leave through traveling dimensions not actually by getting off the planet." He grunts a bit in amusement.

Of course Guinan would ask one of the things he never really thought about.

"But yeah, I'm familiar with the Q. I've caught their attention once or twice."

"We're uh - pretty persistent to keep living, that's another thing," Peter says, shrugging.

There's a trace of wry amusement in there, like maybe people aren't so different from rats or cockroaches or any other species ever, just trying to get by on whatever planet they're on because the alternative is so scary.

"Not all that easy to wipe us out."

"I'm so glad you approve."

Her voice is as dry as the desert planet of Tyree.

"You wouldn't call displacing people from all over the universe 'anything big'? I could point you to some people who would whole-heartedly disagree."

[personal profile] in_the_wrong_q 2014-09-22 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
"Not just this universe." Q comments, setting the glass down and snapping his fingers, appearing in something... a little less garish, but not as racy as a Starfleet Uniform. Just... normal civilian clothes. "Which is why it isn't anything big."

He leans forward on the bar. "Try to imagine it from our perspective. Shouldn't be too hard, for someone like you. A few tens of mortals from their respective multiverses isn't that much."
she_listens: (listening)

[personal profile] she_listens 2014-09-22 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
"Have you?"

She looks amused. To catch the Q's attention does take a certain level of skill. He must be very interesting indeed.

"All right, then. What planet do you call home?"
element_wizard: (scruffy hair)

[personal profile] element_wizard 2014-09-22 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
"Yes, I have. But not in this reality."

Reality is weird. He'll go into it if she asks.

Alec blinks again, because it's not really something his culture, his people every really thought about it. "I suppose it'd be Tynnara."

She usually keeps her face closely guarded, even around her friends. It's the careful schooling of a diplomat, knowing what to show, and when. But Elizabeth's forehead creases with a hesitant uncertainty at John's question.

There's something about his words that make her think this is ... less simple than she'd assumed it was.

Her words are cautious when she replies.

"I was in my office. I'd just finished debriefing your team." A moment's thought, and she elaborates, because John's question ... sounds like it has more in it than that. "After you killed Kolya."
sleepstotheocean: (Can we do this?)

[personal profile] sleepstotheocean 2014-09-29 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Elizabeth is already interested, fascinated, even, by this gracefully elegant woman she's speaking with, but the response to talk of space travel only increases it. Most of the people Elizabeth meets in her work are from worlds that do not even know space travel, beyond that employed by the Wraith in their reign of horror across the galaxy.

"The Arkfall," Elizabeth says, repeating the words with careful precision. "I'm not familiar with it."

Her smile, though, is sympathetic.

"I'm sorry. I can't imagine losing this now."

Her life has been irrevocably changed by the Stargate Program, and she wouldn't step away.

There's a reason she was one of the people who went with John to reclaim Atlantis after they'd been forced back to Earth. A reason she couldn't settle to an ordinary life again, had withdrawn into herself for months.

She's unspeakably glad to have that life back.

Martha greets that with a laugh of her own.

"I dunno. Depends how much trouble the place is ready for." She purses her lips in amusement, eyes sparkling with good humour despite her previous annoyance at being suddenly dragged here instead of being able to go to her interview.

She might have given this sort of thing up, but not because she didn't love it.

"So where are we, then?"
vox_lusciniae: (Curious)

[personal profile] vox_lusciniae 2014-10-07 01:59 pm (UTC)(link)
"Abducted. By aliens."

She doesn't sound disbelieving; of course she doesn't. Her first encounter with aliens was when she and her whole workplace were abducted by them. There is, however, a sort of long-suffering exasperation in her voice that speaks of her having far more experience with being abducted by persistent alien blighters than most people.

"One minute, Earth, next minute, a spaceship. All right, then."

She's hardly about to argue with the evidence of her own eyes, and she doesn't get the feeling that Amy Pond-Williams is lying to her.

Martha's better at picking up on that sort of thing than she used to be. A year spent living off your wits and the kindness of the people she could trust had that effect on her.

"Martha," she says. "Martha Jones."

"Outer space," Lucie explains, gesturing to the window. "The future. It's a relatively friendly science vessel run mostly by humans, but with plenty of aliens all living peacefully together and such, exploring worlds and civilizations and such. Still the Milky Way from what I can piece together, but these blokes haven't even heard of things like the Daleks or Cybermen or Zygons or Eight-Legs or anything like that, so we're pretty sure it's a whole parallel universe."
