That wasn't quite the response he'd expected upon his guess being an affirmative one. While he does manage to keep the confusion over that out of his voice and expression, it still no doubt shows up via body language despite his efforts.

He's not entirely certain how really to answer the question, but he manages to think of a silent explanation for the question directed at him. The boy had come from a much earlier time than him, it was too possible his son had as well. Well, perhaps he could apologize properly to his son this time and not mess it up.

"Forgiveness. I know I can't make up for the past, for the lost time. But ever since I let you go I've regretted it and I spent every moment afterword trying to find you again. I'm sorry for all that you've been through because of my cowardice. I shouldn't have ever let you go."
