TEST DRIVE #1 - Ten Forward

You know how you were standing there, back in your home world, just minding your own business?

Time to forget all about that.

Instead of doing whatever the heck you were just doing, you're standing in the middle of this very stylish, sedate barroom. Happily, you're not alone there - in fact you're surrounded by people who seem to be as confused as you are...and some of them look a little, well unusual

Now would be a great time to do....well, something. Ask some questions of the person nearest you, throw a fit, stage a coup....maybe do a little exploring? No matter what you do, you're going to be here for a very long time.

For others might call it the USS Enterprise, but for the foreseeable future, you'll be calling it home.

[OOC: this test drive's open until the next app period.]

"That they are, Lieutenant Prentice," he says. "To be precise, they're a race of some kind of omnipotent beings, who possess the abilities of instantaneous matter-energy transformation and teleportation. And one of them has taken a liking to our captain."

It's possible this is much worse than it sounds. Captain Picard, for one, isn't happy about the relationship. "It seems this Q is the cause of the disruption in Ten Forward, and that's not all."

"If I got nothing to worry about, you got nothing to worry about," she says. "I'm tall but I'm clumsy, and I got noodle arms, so I try to stay out of trouble--but sometimes, you know, fights happen. Sometimes people push you, and you gotta stand up for yourself. Or they're pushing somebody around who's even less suited to fighting than I am."

She shrugs lightly. "Most of the time, I've found, you just look crazy enough and people back down. They don't know what you might do, and they don't want to risk it. But when they don't back down... I take the advantages I can get."

Hardly a polite one. Steph's eyebrows furrow at the sudden kick but she moves fast enough to grab the back of the chair and stop it from skidding any further. There's a pause, barely a full second passing, before she shrugs the shield bag off her shoulders and pulls the chair a little closer to the table.

"Dimensions?" Steph echoes, frowning as she slips into the chair, keeping the strap of the shield bag over one arm. "What makes you say that?"

"Wow," says Bobby. He'd heard they were powerful, but omnipotent, he thinks, is a bit out of his league.

He glances sideways at La Forge as they walk; he seems to be taking all of this in his stride. "So what else?" he asks.

"No, I suppose not." He still peered at it, wondering if it was real. "But it's not the taste you drink beer for, but the effect. If the effect is different, then what's the point?"

"Rao, call me Kara, please."

The first word is exclaimed, a little like someone might casually say 'god,' if they were the blaspheming type. She grins a little at Steph, forgoing the 'Ms Jor-El is my mother' line, because Kryptonian names don't work like that.

"Pleased to meet you too, Captain Rogers. And doubly please that no one has attacked us, so far. But if they do, something tells me I'd be happy to have you at my side."

"Police boxes don't have windows," Ian said, still chuckling. Also space wasn't quite the same when you were inside something so safe.

That gets a real grin out of Steph, appreciating the humor as much as the permission. "Then call me Steph, please. Kara."

She nods shortly, accepting that they're forging at least a temporary partnership here, but the smile doesn't go far. "I think I might be, too, Kara. Though now we've had a while to look, everyone seems more confused than ready to attack."

They're not the only ones on guard, not even the only ones in uniform - though Kara's is rather, ahem, unique - but there's nothing in the air or the people around them that tells Steph she needs to pull up her shield.

"I'm Jordan." She actually puts down the game, and offers a hand.

The human one.

"This girl, is your relative?"

You can't wear dresses under diving suits, either.

Well... maybe, but it would get awfully bunchy. And that's all he's going to think about women's legs today.

"How can you tell?" he asks. "Do you know everyone who's here? Did she get sent somewhere else?"

"Interesting is far too mild a term."

There's a man standing by where Picard has settled, and he's looking completely non-plussed about all of this. He's definitely not Starfleet or Federation, but he doesn't look too bothered.

"I'd probably go for something a bit stronger."

Although, this gentleman doesn't seem as though he's capable of any emotions other than the bland expression on his face.

[personal profile] ancientstalker 2014-04-20 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, this was a turn-up...

Last Orlin knew, he was on Velona, having just been granted re-ascension, the next, he was here. On a space vessel, and in some kind of recreational facility. He couldn't sense the Others, but he could sense something... stronger.

"And here I thought we achieved the highest point of evolution..."

This is mumbled, but he doesn't seem disappointed. A slight smile dances across his lips.

He's literally just winked in, and is looking confused as hell.

He's wearing a grey shirt and surgical gloves, a headset in his ear, which he reaches up for. Strange how our brains work on auto-pilot.

"Stargate Operations, this is Dr. Becke..." And he trails off, his brain clicking on how pointless it all is. "...I have no bloody idea where I am."

"That assumes evolution is a finite process," says a young girl looking up from what she's been told is a book; it's a thin pad that makes whooshing noises when she swipes a finger across it.
ancientstalker: (heh)

[personal profile] ancientstalker 2014-04-21 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
"Evolution is hardly a finite process."

That's all he's saying on that, as he turns to face the young girl.

"It just depends if your species is capable of it."

"If you're aware it's infinite, then why would you make a comment with such incorrect terminology?" she asks.

"I'm not sure if my species is."

The Alterans believed there to be nothing more post-ascension, so they never tried.

Now? Well... This opens up a whole continuum of possibilities.

"What else would be capable of? Lack of evolution would guarantee the death of your species, wouldn't it?"
ancientstalker: (Default)

[personal profile] ancientstalker 2014-04-21 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
"That depends on if you evolve to a point where there is nothing to harm you."

Which is what the Alterans did.

She glances back at him, squared shoulders relaxing slightly when there's no antagonism in the comment. "Can't be that hard."

It's only partially bravado. SHIELD has cutting-edge tech, and it might be light-years behind whatever this is, but she'd learned to use it, and she can learn to use this. Turning back to the computer screen, she peers at the lit options. "It's got to be easy enough for everyone else onboard to use, otherwise what's the point of having them in the halls? Especially if you're looking for schematics of the ship or directions..."

The last word trails a little, because the screen chirps and the images swoop and blink to form a lit sketch of what must be this ship. Text types itself next to the image, and she reads it out loud: "Galaxy-class starship, USS Enterprise...?"

Okay, that name, she does know.

He shakes her hand.

It's a little awkward; not something he's used to doing with women, but it seems to be what people do.

"Yeah, I'm responsible for her--and I can't keep her safe if I don't know where she is. Or where I am."

He won't define their relationship more clearly than that. It's complicated. All that matters is, she's his to take care of.

[personal profile] shut_up_dammit 2014-04-21 01:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Leonard hated this.

There's people in weird damn costumes and none of the normal Enterprise crew was around. What the hell was going on? No one could answer him. Maybe this was some elaborate prank brought on by the captain himself. If it was, he wasn't playing along. Shit wasn't funny.

He plopped himself at the bar and started drinking. Didn't really care what it was, so long as it tasted like liquor, which, hey, it did. Turns out the booze's still good.

The girl nods, then. "Sure, I can keep an eye out for a brit-like girl, and tell her you're here looking for her. You could take a seat and see if she shows up too, or you two might be going in circles opposite each other."

Hey Bones, have a Power Ranger

[personal profile] pinkjailbait 2014-04-23 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
If she wasn't underage...and it wasn't totally illegal, and generally so not a good idea, she might have joined him. Then again, if Kim could deal with talking to a giant floating head, she was pretty sure she could deal with this.

"Will someone come back to earth and pick me up, because I am totally confused. You don't happen to know who kidnapped us this time do you? Seriously, if we don't fix this soon, I'm never going to finish my math homework."

[personal profile] shut_up_dammit 2014-04-23 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
Leonard silently ordered another drink, and it came. Hey, look at that. Then he gave the girl a quick sideways glance. She was young. Too young to be on the Enterprise. No doubt belong to the crowd of costumed freaks around them. And she was talking about math homework.

He really didn't want to talk to her. Well, okay, maybe he did a little because she was pretty, but he still wasn't convinced this was real. Elaborate joke. Really elaborate joke. But the more he thought about it, the more that didn't make since. Even if this was a joke by Jim, how the hell did all these people get on the Enterprise in the first place? They weren't near earth when he showed up here. Finally, he sighed and set his drink down on the counter, his fingers still on the rim.

"I've got a feeling we aren't on earth anymore, sweetheart," he said, giving her another sideways look, but keeping his eyes on her this time. "But I don't remember anyone kidnapping me. You remembering anything like that?"
