It was baffling, really, that Gaheris was standing here in that reprehensible uniform (that symbol of support for parasites that violated people) and Dylan was... free of it.
In fact, he seemed freed of many of his shackles of idealism. Maybe that wouldn't be how Dylan looked at it; he had always prized his optimism against Gaheris's cynicism (or realism, in Gaheris's opinion). If he was still optimistic, anyway, with that weathered expression and lack of beaming light in his eyes he was obviously not blindly so.
Maybe there was enough realism between them both they could recognize common goals.
"I'll do what I can to help. We both need to leave. These... people don't seem very surprised to have strangers abruptly appear around them." He was just noticing that, since taking in every detail about his former friend had been holding his attention.
