He heard a person swear and for a moment, his eyes went distant. His cheeks cleared as a look of someone looking and listening far away came to his face, and he glanced downward, toward the deck, and beyond it.
A calibration hangs in the balance of going wrong, but is easily righted by a... ah, a crewman taking a test, some decks below, okay. He could hear it all. The voices, the breaths, the engine, and the stars outside. He reminded himself that he was not needed, here and now, and refocused those eyes on hers, and smiled at her, a warm smile again and nodded.
But she had managed to come much closer, and he was caught in looking at her as she came to his table, and he swallowed, and oh, well, there went his cheeks again! "Er, join me for a drink?" His smile was still warm, even if he felt his heart hammering.
