It actually took her a moment to realize his eyes weren't focusing the way she expected. The similarities between this being and Kirk were too startling for her to notice anything else. He looked enough like the Captain to be his brother. If she didn't know what Sam looked like, she might have believed that was who had been brought aboard the ship with her.
