TEST DRIVE #3 - Alien Bazaar/Ten Forward

#1

Option 001. Alien planet, marketplace: So you're new to this whole space travel thing. The ship is cool and all, but there are hundreds of alien worlds out there. You want to explore. To see what the universe REALLY looks like.

Well, here's your chance! Your first stop is this lovely indoor marketplace, which looks kind of like a mall. There are stalls one after the other as far as the eye can see, and they sell all kinds of things: food, clothes, trinkets, animals, fabrics, jewelry, perfumes, books, etc etc. Some things look human, easy to recognize; other things look very alien. There are two levels, and constant chatter as people hawk their wares and discuss prices.

Do you want to explore? Poke at the weird shops? Buy a gift for a new friend? Flirt with someone at the food court? Maybe you see a pickpocket, and must run to the aid of the victim. Maybe there's some other villainy afoot. After all, a crowded marketplace is a good place for villains to lurk, causing trouble. Whether you're a hero or just an unassuming traveler, there proves to be some adventure for you on this planet.

Option 002. Aboard the Enterprise, Ten Forward: You have no idea what just happened. One minute you were home, and now you're on a spaceship, in the middle of a crowded room. It looks like a bar. There are people eating and drinking, some in uniform, others not. Some are clearly aliens.

You've managed to land in Ten Forward a long bar with barstools and a bartender, tables sprinkled throughout, and the far wall is nothing but windows out to space. It looks like a nice lounge, low conversation making the room hum.

Better ask some questions and find out where you are, or just tap the closest person on the shoulder and try to make friends. The bar is open.

Human-shaped she might be, but on a closer glance Irian is actually fairly difficult to mistake for a human woman; the upswept eyebrows and pointed ears are a fairly good indicator. In fact, she's more than once been mistaken for a Vulcan, though once she actually starts speaking or moving, that impression tends to be dispelled. Romulan and Vulcan kinesics, needless to say, are rather different.

She at least has the courtesy to swallow her gut reaction enough to look him in the eye, and ignore the smell. It isn't as if she hasn't scented worse things. Irian has a little difficulty deciding what to make of his tone of voice, which on someone else could so easily be condescending, but she's not detecting any of that here. Curiosity, perhaps.

"These are made of tivish," she says. "Only produced by my people, and usually not traded with outsiders. It is very difficult to make, and very expensive."

And rare almost to nonexistence, in her time. Irian puts down the scarf she was looking at, very gently. She'll have to ask the vendor about the price.

"Something vaguely similar to vine-silk, then" the creature nods. "Perhaps not as expensive, but still rare and precious."

"But, forgive my manners; I'm Doctor Oggurobb Hutt" no, he does not offer a handshake or anything similar.

"Doctor," she says, and inclines her head slightly to him. She doesn't try to pronounce his name, wary of getting it wrong. There's no effort to move any closer to him or try to offer him a handshake, either; Irian is quite comfortable with the physical distance — not far apart enough to be impolite, and just close enough to converse without either of them having to raise their voices to be heard.

There's a moment's hesitance as she considers whether or not to give him her real name; eventually, she decides that she is not at any significant risk here from anyone knowing it. "Irian t'Aumne," she tells him. Commander of the Romulan Republic warbird Bloodwing, late of the Rihannsu Imperial Intelligence Service, known popularly even among other races of the galaxy as the Tal Shiar... but there's no reason to give him any of that information. Her rank, current and former, doesn't matter here, and she knows it.

"Are you a collector, then? Or a trader?" He seems to have some knowledge of the value of commodities, in any case.

"I'm a scientist; my people have a marked appreciation for things of beauty, rarity or value." Hutts like riches, in an obsessive way, but no need to explain that, much less in those terms. "Some others gather great collections of wondrous things, I mostly admire them in a more distant way."

Mostly, meaning his own collection could likely fit in a single skyhopper shuttle.
