TEST DRIVE #1 - Ten Forward

You know how you were standing there, back in your home world, just minding your own business?

Time to forget all about that.

Instead of doing whatever the heck you were just doing, you're standing in the middle of this very stylish, sedate barroom. Happily, you're not alone there - in fact you're surrounded by people who seem to be as confused as you are...and some of them look a little, well unusual

Now would be a great time to do....well, something. Ask some questions of the person nearest you, throw a fit, stage a coup....maybe do a little exploring? No matter what you do, you're going to be here for a very long time.

For others might call it the USS Enterprise, but for the foreseeable future, you'll be calling it home.

[OOC: this test drive's open until the next app period.]

"Me too," she says quietly. "In 1944." It still is 1944 according to her, only apparently it's not really.

"In Germany." Because that might help.

"Oh," he said, with understanding. "Then this place is far better than home for you." Assuming she wasn't a Nazi, but having been brought up to believe that all Nazis were evil and she didn't appear to be evil, Ian assumed she wasn't.

"It's certainly far smaller." Given she's only been exposed to this room and one, maybe two others, and a hallway, she has a perfect right to be saying this, because she doesn't know how wrong she is.

"I don't know about better."

Eight years old, and she already definitely understands the concept of the devil you know or the devil you don't. It makes some people uncomfortable.

"It is better," he said confidently. It was better even than England in 1944. "And a spaceship's exciting." He grinned. How could you not be excited by spaceships?

Simple answer: be Sinthia.

She just looks up at him, moderately confused. "Why? It's no different than an airplane, in...theory," she says, hesitating. She's still not really sure how they're not falling out of the sky without an atmosphere holding them up. Bernoulli does not cover this.

"Well, no, I suppose not," he said slowly. And to someone who'd never see an aeroplane, maybe it would be just as exciting as a spaceship. "I've just never seen a spaceship quite like this. They're usually small and functional and most ordinary people would never get to go into space. They're only this big in science fiction."

"Sometimes science fiction is the predecessor to science fact," she says, trying to be helpful when she's entirely out of her depth.

"Sometimes," he agreed. "It can inspire people to make it fact, but spaceships are hard. What's the power source? How come the gravity is the same as it is on Earth?"

She hesitates for a moment, and blinks, and looks up to him. "I don't know," she says quietly. "I don't know how it works at all. We don't have anything like this where I was. Only in stories, and they never say how the systems work."

She admits that last part softly, because she shouldn't have been reading the stories to begin with. She should have been sleeping, but children and rules, what can you do?

"We only had this sort of thing in stories at home too." Except for when he'd met the Doctor and found those stories could be real, but that was another matter. And it wasn't as if he knew how the TARDIS worked either. "But someone must know how it works, the trick is finding out who and asking them."

"Where is home for you? Or when?" she asks. "I don't know anyone here, though."

"London, 1963." He smiled at her. "I don't know anyone here either, except you."
