There is a DS9 fic out there with basically the same premise and it is FUCKING HEARTBREAKING. I cry every time I read it, it's so fantastic and awful.

And curious question, but have you seen the movie based on that book? It's just as heartbreaking and I swear something shouldn't be that good and hurt so much at the same time.
