TEST DRIVE #6 - The Bridge and Ten Forward

Option 01. Ten Forward: The first thing you see is a bar. A large, lively bar filled with many different faces and many different smells, sights and sounds. This is Ten Forward, the Enterprise's off-duty lounge; feel free to get acquainted with your fellow travelers and try to find somebody who's in charge: this is your new home now, after all...

Option 02. The Bridge: Well, aren't you a lucky duck? You've found yourself in hallowed quarters. Wherever you were before, you're not there anymore. Now you're in a room that could be some kind of command center or control room; there's a captain's chair flanked by seats for his chief officers, computer panels and stations at each interior wall, and before you a broad viewscreen that shows the wide expanse of space rushing towards you. Have you ever wanted to be a starship captain for a day? Well, here's your chance. Feel free to roam around, but try not to touch anything shiny.

[Alec tilts his head curiously, listening to Magneto. It's not what he thought he'd say, but then again his interactions with the man has been limited and then again each one, as he just said, is different.]

No, they don't really, do they? In a way, I guess, everyone is a reality warper. Their perception of who they are changes what they do in reality... and in the case of powers, how they express it, I imagine.

[It's not something he's ever really thought about before. Never need to think about before. But the thought is there now and he'll chew it over.]

[ There's many things that have enchanted and delighted him. But really - for all his nature, power fascinated him. How they worked, how they turned out, what people did with them. Perhaps that was the engineer in him. ]

It's not quite to the level that a certain very terrible 'documentary' on quantum physics would make it out to be, but I suppose that's true. I've heard it questioned if we don't have some unconscious control over how the final expression of our powers works out, rather than it being completely random.

I can't say I've seen the documentary. What was it about? It sounds like fuzzy science.

[He then makes a bit of a humming noise.]

There's possibly some merit to that. I was born with the ability to control all four elements and I should be able to merge them in someway, but I've got a complete and utter mental block on it because I was told as a child that if I were to use all four, I'd be killed. Been trying for years now... can't do it.

It is fuzzy science, basically this "theory" which states our consciousness controls the world.

[ He's not impressed with it. ]

Yes. It does happen occasionally with some people and their powers.

[ He's pretty sure it's happened with Rogue. ]

[Alec laughs hard. Really. Laughs, like he's just heard the funniest joke in the world, and ends up with a hiccup, leaning against the wall.]

Oh. That's hilarious. That is ... That... is... Oh... They couldn't be more wrong...

[He hiccups a laugh again.]

Getting told you might get killed for using it does that to you.

[Probably. Her and Cyclops... depending on... things.]

[ Magneto actually relaxes a little at the laughter, leaning against the wall. ]

They have this entire segment about an experiment where people thought negative things towards beakers of water and positive things to others and claimed the molecules changed.

[ And his is a world where unstable molecules exist but this is just stupid. ]

Yes, it would.

[ And a few others. ]

[Another hiccup of laughter. For a moment it looks like Alec is going to slip to the floor, but he catches his balance.]

All right, now that's just plain stupid. I mean, I've heard and seen some pretty stupid shit in my life, but that... hippie molecules... or would that be mood ring molecules? That's just... ridiculous.

I mean... just... what reality are they living in?

[ Oh come on Alec, that would have been hilarious. ]

One borne of too many LSD experiments? I had to watch it just to see how badly the science was.

[He's not the Fool. But, he has apparently given himself the hiccups.]

[ It's rare that it happens, but he's glad he's having this kind of conversation. ]

Lorena swore I wouldn't make it through it without breaking the TV. I won, at the expense of having to watch it.

[ There's a wry smile to his face as he says it. ]

[Sometimes it's nice to have conversations about stupid shit when there's nothing else to worry about.]

Oh, I've [hiccup] been in [hiccup] those situations [hiccup] before.

Usually re- [hiccup] oh bugger [hiccup] fucknuts.

I usually regret it later.

[He hesitates... and then hiccups again.]

I'm sure the TV ap-[hiccup] appreciated it, at [hiccup] least.

[Beyond the hiccups, Alec thinks this is hysterical. The idea of Magneto doing something so... not exactly childish or silly .. he's not sure of the word... maybe human... compared to how the rest of the people think of him.]

[ It's not to have conversations about stupid shit period. Sometimes you have to, just to feel normal when nothing else does.

And nothing else DOES right now. ]

It's been a while, but yes, you do generally regret those. Though it's worth it in other ways.

[ Something so mundane. He's also been known to color in little paper books with his grandchildren, when he saw them. There was a world outside being Magneto, even if he occasionally forgot it - and made damn sure the world did. ]

[It's insanely amusing that talking to Alec is what's making Magneto feel normal. Usually he weirds people out.]

How [hiccup] was it worth [hiccup] it?

[Now coloring with his grandchildren Alec can easily see. And taking a lot of quiet joy in it.]

Oh for fuck [hiccup]'s sake.

[ Weird is his normal. Discussions of powers and science, that's his normal. ]

Well. Now I get to test her mettle with something faux-science and geology related.

[ He got to bond with his kid. It was worth it.

But he just laughs as Alec. ]

It's a diaphragm spasm. Holding your breath really does work, as does drinking something.

[Sounds like Alec's normal.]

Geology [hiccup] related?

[He makes a face at Magneto... it's really the sort of face that a child would make at their parent who told them something completely obvious and annoying, like putting on a sweater when it's cold out.

But he does try holding his breath.]

It's what her degree is in.

[ Where as he studied physics. But the look gets him another snort of quiet laughter. ]

She's a bit of a rock hound.

[Alec can be incredibly childish at times, as he mentioned earlier. The laughter earns Magneto an eyeroll of annoyance. Again, like a child.]

My mother... [he says experimentally... the hiccups appear to be gone.] my mother was fond of rocks as well. Though she was an artist... I don't know exactly what you could do with a degree in geology.

[ It makes sense that one's maturity level matches one's lifespan - someone who will live hundreds of years likely wouldn't be entirely an adult before their first century. Not that Magneto knows this applies to Alec. He's just amused. ]

Teach. Research - same as any other degree in the sciences. Also geology is the basis for studies of oceanography and astrophysics. Environmental sciences and engineering as well. Or working with paleontologists. It's actually a broad field.

[At least his hiccups are gone. Maturity level aside. The thought about having Magneto as a parent does flicker through his head briefly though. It's probably true in some alternate reality he may look up later.]

Ah. I guess so. I've never been much for research or studying... things like that. Lousy student. What does she specialize in? And who is she? She must have some influence to get you to watch such a hideous movie.

[He almost asks if she's his wife, but stops himself. No need to go down that road.]

[ Sad and ironic thoughts - given his happiest time of his life was when he was nothing more than a husband and father. ]

Astronomy of late. And she's my daughter. Sort of.

[ Genetically, anyway. ]

[Considering who he had to become, Alec doesn't blame him.

He flicks a glance out the window at the mention of astronomy.]

She'd probably love to be here then. And sort of? Step-daughter?

[ It's a strange circumstance, yes. ]

I don't doubt she would.

Genetically she's mine.

[ There's a certain finality to it - it's not a refusal to talk about it, it's just a very long story. ]

Genetically she's yours. Female clone? Unknown experiment? Kid from another reality? Girl you got pregnant without knowing about it because she never told you about?

[One has to wonder about Alec's experiences that illegitimate child is the last thing he comes up with.]

((ooc: I hate that Polaris is Magneto's daughter. Because God forbid two people with similar powers aren't related. I mean not all telepaths are related to each other...though the Summers-Grey family leaves one to wonder...))

I don't lose track of my lovers. I know what she was told, her mother and I had an affair. But I wouldn't become involved with someone who was married, and certainly not so soon after I lost my wife. So I'm not entirely certain, save she's mine, genetically, but not from a relationship I've had.

[ It doesn't even seem odd to Magneto, which is also telling. ]

(( OOC: I don't MIND it, so long as Magneto's character isn't butchered over it. Notice, he's never claimed Susanna as a lover, save HoM and that doesn't count. I have my theories about her, which the preHoM Excalibur outlined. ))

Well, that's good. If you don't keep track of them all sorts of awkward shit can happen.

[He's speaking from experience here.]

I guess that leaves things like child from another reality... which is... not fun... or experiment like things. Maybe a thought child...

But, it seems like you're willing to have a relationship with her and acknowledge the ... at least genetic bond between you. Not many people would do that. Which is nice. Good of you.

((ooc: I can get on board with that. I've been sort of out of the X-Men fandom for a bit. And yeah, I do remember the HoM thing, which was fun crack... Was she in Excalibur? I thought she was mostly X-Factor?))
